Question type: Drag-and-drop selection

One type of question available in Moodle that can be used for tests is drag-and-drop labels.

As there are various drag-and-drop question types in Moodle, we would like to introduce these to you and explain how to create them.

This question type allows you to drag labels onto an image using drag-and-drop.

Prerequisite: Test

To add the 'Drag-and-Drop Markers' question type to a test, you must first create a 'Test' activity within the course.

To do this, switch to edit mode (Fig. 1).

Create the Test activity by first clicking on Create activity or materials (Fig. 2) and then selecting Test (Fig. 3). Then enter a name for the test and save.

Once this is done, please go to the page where you can edit the test content and select Add question (Fig. 4). You will then be redirected to a page where you should click Add again and then New question (Fig. 5).

In the selection dialogue that appears, select the ‘Drag-and-drop markers’ question type and confirm by clicking the ‘A»å»å’ button (Fig. 6).

Set a task

On the page that now appears, start by filling in the mandatory fields under the ‘G±ð²Ô±ð°ù²¹±ô’ menu item. These are marked with a white exclamation mark inside a red circle (Fig. 7).

Use the ‘Question title’ field to give the question a name under which it will be listed in your question catalogue.

In the ‘Question text’ field, enter the instructions for your students. This is the task text.

Then set the number of marks to be awarded for this task.

Add a background image

To allow students to drag elements onto an image, the image must be added to the question.

Under Preview, you can simply drag the desired image into the file upload dialogue or add it using the file selection dialogue (Fig. 8).

Define markers

In the next section of the menu, ‘L²¹²ú±ð±ô²õ’, you can now define the elements to be dragged onto the background image. These are always short label texts (Fig. 9).

Set drop zones

In the next menu section, ‘Drop Zones’, you can specify the positions on the background image for the markers you have just defined.

To do this, select an outline shape for each drop zone (Fig. 10). Select which marker belongs to the zone and then drag the marker to the desired area (Fig. 11). The coordinates are then calculated automatically.

Result

Figure 12 below shows the result displayed to students during the test. Unlike the ‘drag-and-drop on image’ question type, students do not see the drop zones here; instead, they must click on the markers you have specified.

Consequently, this question type is less suitable for large areas, but works very well for areas where precision is crucial.

Hinweis

In Moodle, it is sometimes possible to display and format mathematical content using MathJax or LaTeX syntax. For this question type, however, only the question text can be formatted. Unfortunately, formatting is not possible in the answer options, as this may cause display issues in Moodle.

Question types affected by this issue: Select Missing Words, Calculated Multiple Choice, Drag and Drop onto Text, Matching, Embedded Answers (Cloze), Drag-and-Drop Markers.

Question types that can be used instead:

  • Drag and Drop onto Image (Mathematical expressions can be included using screenshots or images.)
  • Multiple Choice (Answer options can be formatted.)
  • Ordering (For this question type, the answer format must be set to "Moodle Text Format".)
