Challenges and current results in the design of cooperative human-automated vehicle

Abstract: This lecture by Martin Baumann (University of Ulm, Department of Human Factors) examines cooperative interaction between human drivers and automated vehicles in road traffic, drawing on two representative scenarios: lane changes (voluntary cooperation) and narrow passage situations (necessary cooperation).
The studies show that perceived criticality, operationalised through Time-to-Collision (TTC) and Time-to-Arrival (TTA), is a decisive factor in drivers' action selection during conflict situations. However, TTA/TTC perception alone cannot fully account for behavioural choices. Joint situation awareness proves essential: providing drivers with anticipatory information leads to more frequent selection of defensive, cooperative strategies. Additionally, expectations toward automated vehicles differ markedly from those directed at human drivers – AVs are anticipated to behave more defensively, and violations of these expectations can trigger critical situations. The lecture concludes that movement patterns aligned with explicit signals are crucial for effective intention communication in mixed traffic environments.

About: Martin Baumann war von 1996 bis 2001 als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Technischen Universität Chemnitz tätig, wo er 2001 promovierte. Anschließend arbeitete er dort von 2001 bis 2005 als wissenschaftlicher Assistent und absolvierte 2005 einen dreimonatigen Forschungsaufenthalt bei TNO in den Niederlanden. In den Jahren 2006 bis 2007 folgte ein zweijähriges Postdoc-Forschungsprojekt bei der Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen. Danach war er am Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) in Braunschweig bis 2014 Leiter der Gruppe „Fahrerkognition und Modellierung“ sowie von 2011 bis 2014 zusätzlich Leiter der Gruppe „Systemergonomie und Interaktionsgestaltung“. Seit 02/2014 ist er Professor für Human Factors an der Universität Ulm.
